About Littlesweet Baking

Hi - my name is Megan Henry and I figure that any ‘about us’ story for Littlesweet should really come straight from me since for most of it I’ve been the Littlesweet ‘everything’ – from baker to copywriter and marketing manager, to dishwasher and delivery driver. So let me tell you a bit about how it all began….

In 2010, while pregnant with our third child, I had what I like to call an epiphany. Why did all baking mixes have to have that weird packet mix taste? Why couldn't they be made with real ingredients so the end result tasted like real home baking? Why did the convenience of a baking mix have to sacrifice quality to the point where many people refused to even consider using them? Well turns out there was absolutely no good reason, so I decided I was going to do something about it myself and redefine what using a baking mix was all about.

I was a busy mum at the time (I still am – and that’s not looking like it’s about to change any time soon either) and I understood that sometimes in this world you need a shortcut. Some things have to give when you're trying to 'do it all' and I wanted to provide that shortcut for baking. I wanted to make it simple and convenient without sacrificing taste or quality. I wanted people to experience the joy of home baking - the joy that comes from the smell of baking in the oven or cookies warming on a bench, the joy that is the smile on a kids face when they see their birthday cake made just for them, or the pride from baking something themselves. The joy that comes from sharing food with friends and family and even strangers. To me, food is such an important part of the memories I have of growing up - and of the memories we're creating as a family - from the everyday meals around the dinner table, to celebrations big and small, and the time spent together preparing for these. I wanted to be able to share that with the world and a simple shortcut to home baking from scratch was how I was going to do it.

As it turns out, launching a range of packaged food products is quite an expensive task. And I was quite lacking in an expense fund. So while my idea was great, I needed to find a way to fund this dream and I realised I was going to have to start small. I got my home kitchen licensed with my local council, and with my trusty red KitchenAid mixer I started to bake. I started with one order from a friend, which grew to friends of friends becoming customers, which grew to random strangers contacting me for orders. From the very beginning my philosophy was on keeping my business and my products real. I believe in real butter, in supporting ethical businesses by only using free-range eggs, and I believe that there is no substitute for quality chocolate. I get excited by the art and science of baking and the endless possibilities that come from a few basic techniques combined with basic ingredients like butter, sugar and eggs. I progressed to a stall at my local farmers market, took on bigger markets, wholesaled to cafes and ran workshops, all of which helped Littlesweet Baking earn its reputation of quality, consistency and generosity. This reputation and my extremely loyal group of customers and supporters allowed me to successfully crowdfund the capital I needed to finally launch my baking mixes to the world. I can honestly say that I owe the success of my business to those loyal supporters of mine - I have been very blessed to have the most amazing group of people cheering on my business from the very early days and am extremely grateful for the relationships I have made along the way.

Fast forward to 2017 and just as my kids have grown, so has my little business. It’s been a journey of baby steps, detours and u-turns which has seen a tiny seed of an idea transform into something real and amazing that I’m incredibly proud of. Littlesweet Baking now operates out of a commercial kitchen in O’Connor and as well as producing our artisan baking mixes and frozen cookie dough which are stocked in stores throughout Western Australia, we also supply a number of local businesses with wholesale baking and have re-launched our catering and custom order baking. We’re still committed to using the best ingredients we can to create premium, artisan baking products that are made with real ingredients and are free from any artificial flavours, colours and preservatives and will continue to do so through the future years as Littlesweet continues to grow.

Kind regards,

Megan
